Management of Twinning Cows

Management of Twinning Cows

Pregnancy scanning of sheep with ultra sound allows ewes to be managed according to expected birth type, ie singles on one feed level, twins on a higher plane of nutrition.  We now do the same with our twin pregnancy scanned cows and separate them from the main mob at calf weaning and run them on a better paddock.  This allows them to maintain better condition at calving, and gives them the best chance to rebreed at the next joining.

It also allows us to give them better supervision at calving time just as we do our twin bearing ewes.

The key difference between the past and the modern approach is that the use of ultra sound technology provides information on pregnancy status allowing a decision to be made on how to best manage for optimum results.
